Certification Programs
There are a lot of programs out there that aim to reduce a building’s environmental footprint. If you are interested, we can build a house to meet the following certifications:
On the balance, we think that the best approach pulls ideas from several of these programs---but doesn’t necessarily seek certification. The cost of certification varies with each project, but generally, this will range from $750 - $3,000. Tax credits may reduce the cost of certification.
Certification is composed of three basic steps:
Building Commissioning / Testing
Documentation
Filing Fees
You will notice that we have not included LEED Certification in this list. Although the US Green Building Council and the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™ have fueled public awareness of environmental issues related to buildings---we believe this program is too complicated for residential construction, and that some of its priorities are askew.
